St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners (District 1) Candidate Debate

October 11, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for a political debate featuring the candidates running for the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners (District 1). Incumbent Andy Kostielney (R) will face-off against challenger Tim Swager (D) as they discuss top challenges and opportunities for St. Joseph County, Indiana.

We encourage all voters in St Joseph County to attend.

One of the great challenges in this county is the overall health of its citizens (59th of 92 counties) and the quality of life (71st of 92 counties).

Health factors in the County Health Rankings represent focus areas driving how long and how well we live and include health behaviors, such as tobacco use. Just less than 46,000 adults in St. Joseph County smoke (23%) which is higher than both the Indiana and US smoking rate. Additionally, 11.1% of pregnant women in St Joseph County use tobacco, leading to nearly 400 births affected by smoking. Low birth weight, SIDS, reduced lung function and other health problems in children contribute to our high infant mortality rate and cost $538,746 per year.

The tax burden for each Indiana household is $903 annually for smoking-caused government spending.

In South Bend, a smokefree air ordinance protects all workers from second hand smoke exposure and protect not only the employees (and their families), but help the business owners keep health care, maintenance, and insurance costs lower.

We support a county wide comprehensive smokefree air ordinance for all people living and working in St Joseph County.
